For our founder, Shawn Brown, technology wasn’t just a career choice—it was a calling that started early. He was that kid, the one fascinated by the inner workings of computers when they were still a novelty for many. This passion wasn’t just a hobby; by age 12, Shawn was already setting up computers and building early networks for local businesses.

This hands-on experience continued to grow. Some in the early online world might remember ‘The Stoplight BBS,’ a bulletin board system Shawn ran, a testament to his early involvement with technology and the predecessor (FIDONet) to what we now use as the Internet. Throughout high school, his path was clear, excelling in those early computer classes first being provided, such as keyboarding, data processing, and introduction to computers. He was also on the computer team which utilized early programming languages such as C and Visual Basic.

A different kind of challenge came with military service, where Shawn served in the US Army. Even there, his tech aptitude found an outlet, working with early networking technologies like 10Base2 and Token Ring and even pulling lines for AT&T on base to bring crucial phone service to the barracks. This diverse experience honed problem-solving skills and a can-do attitude that are invaluable in the tech world.

Transitioning to the corporate sector, Shawn brought his expertise to Marathon,tackling everything from the help desk, handling software support and resolving complex IT issues. He contributed to cross-functional teams focused on company-wide telecommunications and server support. This was followed by further experience with SAIC. There, he further deepened his knowledge of enterprise systems and Microsoft Exchange, and also became the go-to expert for Blackberry support. Along the way, he solidified his expertise with key industry credentials, including several from CompTIA and Microsoft.

Throughout these years, the drive to help others with their technology needs never faded. What started as a side business in 1998, providing dedicated support to various clients, officially became Computers and Such in 2010, notably supporting a significant coal company and solidifying our commitment to serving the technology needs of businesses.

This journey, from a kid captivated by computers to a seasoned IT professional with decades of diverse experience, is the foundation of Computers and Such. It’s why we’re not just about fixing problems, but about understanding your needs and providing practical, reliable solutions that truly support your success.
